WARRI FEDERAL CONSTITUENCY: We are also your in-laws — Gbenekama tells Tinubu, warns of impending storm
The Fiyewei of the ancient Gbaramatu Kingdom in Warri South-West Local Government Area of Delta State, High Chief (Dr.) Godspower Gbenekama, JP, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to prevail on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to implement the report on the outcome of the Supreme Court ordered fresh delineation of the Warri Federal Constituency with a subtle remark that "we are also your in-laws".
High Chief Gbenekama's comments follow those of other leaders of Ijaw and Urhobo ethnic nationalities in the Constituency at a world press conference on Monday, May 4, 2026.
The Fiyewei of Gbaramatu Kingdom, who addressed Tinubu as President "Emilokun", a Yoruba word which means "It's my turn", said it is now the turn of the Warri Federal Constituency to be treated fairly ahead the 2027 general elections by INEC's yielding to its demands to avoid a boycott of the election by the Ijaw and Urhobo ethnic nationalities in Warri South, Warri South-West, and Warri North local government areas of the State.
"Ladies and gentlemen, we have said that it will be difficult for us to participate in the electoral process that INEC is about commencing because we have been asked, we have been told that we cannot be voted for neither can we vote for anybody in this process," the Fiyewei said.
High Chief Gbenekama also dared the Department of State Security (DSS) agency of the federal government he said had earlier invited Urhobo and Ijaw leaders to its office after their demand to INEC at the first press briefing on August 25, 2025, to implement its fresh wards delineation report.
The vocal leader stated that while both the Urhobo and the Ijaw agreed to keep calm, however, after nine months since the first press briefing, nothing has been done to address the issue, despite a promise from the security agency he noted has no jurisdiction over the matter that falls squarely on INEC.
"As we all know, August 25th, after our last press conference, leaders who sat and delivered the speech and the mandate of the appeal were invited to the DSS office with a view of telling them to keep quiet in the face of the truth. However, then and there we told the DSS people that we cannot pretend any more.
"We have tried our best to ensure that women, youths, elders and everybody keep it calm because there was a promise, both from the NSA office and the DSS office. However, it is not their duty, it is INEC's duty. But we felt that maybe let's give them the benefit of the doubt. About nine months going, nothing has happened. And the country still wants to feed this nation with our economic resources.
"We want to state categorically that we are tired of talking to our leaders. We are tired of talking to our women. There is a storm building, and very soon it will blow this nation away. I don't care how many times you invite me to the DSS office. We always say that if we cannot be fed from the resources that come from our people, then nobody will feed from that resources, nobody!
"And if it is that reason this nation will want to destroy, kill and maim all our leaders from Urhobo and Ijaw extraction of the Warri Federal Constituency, we are ready to bear whatever cross the government bring to us," Gbenekama vowed.
He stressed further that their demand is not a threat but a clamour for justice as they will no longer remain silent while their rights to vote and to be voted for is being trampled by certain forces that are hell bent on denying the people their civic duty to vote.
"As press statement says, 'A people denied the ballot, and due political participation and representation will seek other roads. That is not a threat. That is history.
"President Emilokun, if you want to favour your in-laws, we are also your in-laws," he charged, warning that the indigenous ethnic nationalities of Urhobo and Ijaw in Warri Federal Constituency will resist attempts to deny them of justice.
