NMU BILL ASSENT: Dr Olaye applauds President Tinubu, Manager, Onohwakpo, Pondi, salutes other stakeholders
Dr. Olaye Messiah Doupade, a renowned humanitarian activist in the Niger Delta region, has extended his heartfelt appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his visionary leadership in signing the Nigeria Maritime University (NMU), Okerenkoko, in Gbaramatu Kingdom, Warri South West Local Government Area of Delta State into law, a landmark decision he described as "a transformative step that solidifies Nigeria’s commitment to maritime education, economic prosperity, and youth empowerment."
The humanitarian activist made the remark in a statement he issued in response to the assent of the NMU Bill by Mr. President.
Dr. Olaye thanked Senator James Manager, Senator Joel Onohwakpo, Rt. Hon Julius Pondi for the laudable role they played in signing the bill in parliament at both the green and the red chambers of the National Assembly.
The Okerenkoko born leader also hailed the monumental achievement as a victory for not only the people of Okerenkoko but as a national milestone that will elevate Nigeria’s position in the global maritime industry, stressing further that the Maritime University is a national institution / asset established for the benefit of all Nigerians, particularly the people of the Niger Delta.
According to him, "The formalization of the university will enhance the nation’s capacity to train top-tier maritime professionals, expand economic opportunities, and reinforce Nigeria’s role in international maritime affairs."
While acknowledging the pillars behind the achievement, Dr Olaye sent warm congratulatory message to the royal father of Gbaramatu Kingdom, Oboro Gbaraun II (JP), Aketekpe, Agadagba, for being a royal father whose reign have attracted so much development to the kingdom, and prayed for a very long reign of Aketekpe on the throne as more development are coming to the kingdom in his era.
Dr. Olaye also expressed profound gratitude to High Chief Dr. Government Oweizide Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, for his unwavering commitment and sacrifice in ensuring the establishment of the university. He also commended the relentless efforts of Mr Matthew Tonlagha, Chief Engr. Keston Pondi, and others who worked assiduously to achieve the milestone.
He emphasized that the personalities mentioned above are "distinguished individuals who invested time, resources, and energy to push for this historic moment", stressing that "their tireless efforts will forever be etched in the annals of Niger Delta’s progress,” Dr. Olaye stated.
Speaking further he added: "The signing of the bill into law is a memorable moment for the Okerenkoko people and we will continue to cherish this historic moment in the annals of the Gbaramatu Kingdom."
In his call for unity and sustainable development, Dr. Olaye urged all stakeholders, community leaders, and well-meaning Nigerians to unite in supporting the university’s growth and ensuring that it fulfills its mandate.
He called on the Federal Government and relevant agencies to provide the necessary infrastructural and academic support to make the institution a center of excellence for maritime studies.
“The Maritime University, Okerenkoko, is a beacon of hope for our region. It represents progress, empowerment, and the collective strength of our people. We must now focus on building a world-class institution that will stand the test of time,” Olaye concluded.
