EFCC: Delta activist demands justice over N1.3trn mismanaged 13% derivation funds

A Delta State-born environmental rights activist and development advocate, Chief (Comrade) Sheriff Mulade has appealed to the Economic and Financial Crime Commission, EFCC, to recover and return N1.3 trillion it alleged was "mismanaged, misappropriated and misapplied" by the previous administration of the State led by Sen. Ifeanyi Okowa.
Mulade made the appeal in a statement he released on Wednesday and made available to the press.
The foremost development advocate and a former chairman of oil-rich Kokodiagbene Community in Gbaramatu Kingdom, Warri South-West Local Government Area of Delta State, said the wasted resources was for the benefits of host communities.
Mulade in his appeal to the Chairman of the EFCC called on the Boss of the anti-graft to address the issue he described as "critical" devoid of political interference.
He said, "We want to strongly believe that the former governor of Delta State, Sen. Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa political cross carpeting should not be considered for compromise to the detrimental of the host communities."
Recall that the EFCC withheld the international passport of the former governor of Delta State, Ifeanyi Okowa on November 4, 2024, over an alleged diversion of N1.3trn derivation fund which amounted to a 13 per cent derivation fund from the federation account between 2015 and 2023.
However, the cross carpeting of the former governor and his predecessor from the People's Democratic Party, PDP, to the All Progressives Congress, APC, is sending feelers that it would ease his prosecution over the alleged misused funds.
