2ND ANNIVERSARY: Delta 8th Assembly unveils propose bill to regulate skyrocketing house rents

The Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Hon. Emomotimi Dennis Guwor, has unveiled a proposed bill to regulate skyrocketing house rents in the State with the aim to ensure affordable housing, particularly for low and middle-income earners.
Guwor made the disclosure during a press conference in Asaba, the State capital, to mark the second anniversary of the 8th Assembly on Friday, June 13, 2025.
According to the Speaker, the bill to regulate high rent is coming on the heels of widespread complaints from residents in urban areas encompassing Asaba, Warri, Sapele, and Ughelli.
The Speaker also emphasized that the Assembly would engage relevant stakeholders, including the State Ministry of Housing, real estate developers, landlords' associations, and civil society groups, to ensure the proposed bill is balanced, effective, and enforceable.
The rent control bill is expected to be tabled in the next legislative session, with many debtors hopeful it will bring much-needed stability to the housing sector.
Guwor also highlighted several landmarks bills passed during the sessions, key oversight activities, and collaborative engagements with the executive arm of government that have strengthened governance and development in the State.
The Speaker noted that during the second session of the 8th Assembly, the House demonstrated uncommon diligence, focus, and unity in the discharge of its legislative responsibilities.
"Our second anniversary is not just a time to celebrate, but also to reaffirm our commitment to the people," the Speaker added.
