updated 15 Jun, 2024

In the seventh hour on Friday, June 14, 2024, families, friends and other sympathisers of the late Amb. Mrs. Blessing Oghale Gbenekama (JP) converged at the Safe Haven Mortuary in Okumagba Avenue, Warri, Delta State, to convey home to Azama community in Gbaramatu Kingdom, Warri South-West council area, the remains of the wife of the Fiyewei of the kingdom, High Chief Amb. Dr. Godspower Gbenekama (JP).

Earlier, the skies had rained a downpour of tears as nature seemed antagonised losing an angel in human form to an enemy that has continued to decimate life endlessly irrespective of beauty, status, or age its victims.

It is believed that the rude shock of the untimely passing of late Amb. Blessing on June 7, 2024, coupled with the immeasurable pain it caused those close to her, prompted her swift burial which began with a service of songs ceremony in the Fiyewei's residence on Wednesday, June 12.

One of such expressions of the pain felt on her demise was conveyed earlier in a condolence note to the Fiyewei by the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Dennis Guwor, who also extolled the late Amb. Mrs. Blessing Oghale Gbenekama (JP) for her godly virtues, when he wrote:

"It is with profound shock and deep pains I commiserate with you on the unexpected demise of your dearly beloved caring wife... She was an epitome of a truly virtuous woman, very industrious, hardworking, a well-known peace advocate in the Niger Delta, an excellent ambassador of 'The Association of Peace Ambassadors'. Her service to God and humanity is exemplary. She was a distinguished philanthropist. As a member of the Gilead of the Living Faith Church, she extended help to the less privileged especially the orphans," the Speaker noted.

"This loss, to say the least, is indeed painful, devastatingly heart-rending, not only to your family and community at large, but many persons who drew inspirations from her in the course of her work and service to humanity," wrote the Nigeria Maritime University (NMU) Registrar, Dr. Alfred Mulade, in the institution's condolence on behalf of the staff.

Continuing the NMU added, "The testimonies lauding her personage and character as a committed and dedicated staff of this University lend credence to the fact that she was a rare breed of a kind whose sterling qualities of patriotism, modesty, charisma, vivacious and loyalty were her distinguishing hallmarks."

The final journey of the deceased began few minutes to 8am on Friday with a motorcade from the Safe Haven Mortuary to Miller waterfront near NPA Port in Warri where the casket holding her remains was ferried in a fast boat en route to Azama community, her final resting place.

It was not hard to notice the social esteem that the late Amb. Mrs. Blessing Oghale Gbenekama (JP) commanded judging by the massive crowd that accompanied her remains from Warri to Azama. Asides those of her in-laws, there were other families from her hometown, Ozoro in Isoko North LGA, as well as friends from the Delta State University (DELSU) Abraka, the Delta State College of Nursing, Warri, and the NMU among others.

At 40 years of age, the late Amb. Mrs. Blessing Oghale Gbenekama (JP) could be said to have lived a short life, however, those years were not empty but filled with accomplishments and lived in excellence. It is no wonder she would be missed dearly as all who knew her testified of her positive charm that impacted positively on them. May her gentle golden loving and charming soul rest peacefully until Resurrection Day, Amen.
