DESOPADEC: Governor Oborevwori releases N8.4 billion to settle Commission's debts

The Delta State Government led by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has revealed that it has released ₦8.4 billion to settle outstanding debts incurred in the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC) for the past 15 years.

This is according to a post on the official handle of the Delta State Government on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, November 8, 2025.

According to the post, which did not give enough details of the nature of the debts, noted that the settled liabilities of the Commission also offer opportunity for development.

The post reads:

"Clearing the Past. Building the Future.

"With ₦8.4 billion released to settle DESOPADEC’s outstanding liabilities, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori continues to turn financial discipline into real development.

"Each cleared debt strengthens confidence, restores balance, and reaffirms his commitment to accountable leadership under the MORE Agenda, where progress means results that everyone can see and feel."

DESOPADEC is an agency of the state government that focuses on the infrastructural and human capacity development of oil-bearing communities in the state.

However, the Commission's purpose is yet to be felt at the grassroots as the politicisation of the 13 per cent derivation fund—which is its source of revenue—and corrupt practices have continued to impoverish inhabitants of host communities producing oil and gas.

This has continued to fuel calls to the federal government to effect the direct payment of the funds directly to the Commission rather than through the state government.
