BIOGRAPHY: Late Pa. Captain Stephen Megbulagha Ofoghan Goes Home to Rest in Kunukunuma

Death is a bitter pill no one wants to swallow. Yet, in the end, every one will eventually taste the bitter pill. Sadly, and ironical too, the bitterness of the pill is felt more by those still conscious–the living. And that was the situation for the children and families of late Pa Capt Stephen Megbulagha Ofoghan, popularly known as Otorlor, who was laid to rest in his hometown, Kunukunuma in Gbaramatu Kingdom, Warri South-West council area of Delta State, on Friday, December 13, 2024.

Earlier, the remains of the late father, grandfather and great grandfather was conveyed by families and sympathisers from the Ame Specialist Hospital Mortuary in Okumagba Avenue, Warri, in the afternoon of Thursday, December 12, to the Miller Waterfront near NPA, and thereafter by boat to his hometown.

A Christian funeral service held early hours of the evening in his honour with Bible readings, testimonials, rendition of the biography of the deceased, a brief sermon and prayers for the family members.

A social wake-keep ceremony followed with entertainment and dances by the children and other relatives as they make merry in an attempt to forget their sorrows of losing their beloved father at 91 years.

However, in the early morning hours of Saturday reality check came back in as they undertook the final rites of laying the remains of their departed father to eternal rest, hone from this plane called Earth.

According to his biography, "The late Pa. Capt. Stephen Megbulagha Ofoghan was born on March 20, 1931, in Oporoza Town. His life was marked by resilience and determination. Orphaned at a tender age, he lost his father, a native of Oporoza, while his mother Tubode hailed from Kunukunuma Town. Pa. Capt. Stephen was blessed with a loving family. He was first married to Mrs. Dora, with whom he had nine children. Later in life he married Mabel, and they were blessed with two children together.

"Despite the challenges, Pa. Capt. Stephen grew up to become a skillful fisherman and eventually joined the marine industry. His dedication and expertise propelled him to become a respected Captain.

"Capt. Stephen had a distinguished career serving as Captain of the best Service Crew Boat at Zapata Marine Company Limited, crew member at McDermott for several years before joining Zapata Marine Company Limited. He was renowned for his exceptional leadership and favoured by his employers. He was their favourite captain until he resigns.

"Pa Capt. Stephen was a beloved figure, cherished for his kindness and generosity and warmth. He was a loving father to his family, a supportive uncle and mentor to many, a pillar of the community, earning respect and admiration from all.

"In 2011, Capt. Stephen committed his life to Christ, marking the beginning of a profound spiritual journey. He passionately served the Lord, exemplifying devotion and faith.

"He was survived by 11 children, 32 grandchildren and great grandchildren."
