2027: Don't Undermine Coastal Highway for Political Gain, Murray-Bruce Cautions Donald Duke
A Nigerian business magnate and politician, Senator Benedict Murray-Bruce, has cautioned a former governor of Cross River State and currently the presidential candidate of the People's Redemption Party for the 2027 general election, Donald Duke, not to undermine the Coastal Highway project for political advantage.
Murray-Bruce, who formerly represented the Bayelsa State's East Senatorial District in the green chambers, made the comments in a post on his X handle in response to Duke's recent statement on Friday, October 16, 2026.
Duke who appeared on Arise TV had criticised the Coastal Highway project and described it as too expensive, alleging that the project might never be completed.
Expressing his surprise at the recent comments by Duke regarding the project, Murray-Bruce alleged that the Cross River State governor had earlier glorified the project.
"Some years ago, you and I travelled along the stretch of the coastline where this road now runs, and I clearly remember your praise for the vision behind it. That is why your recent comments surprised me," he wrote.
The Founder of Silverbird Group acknowledged that the highway was expensive but argued that major infrastructure projects require bold investment and can serve future generations.
He said President Bola Tinubu had committed to funding the project and was keeping that commitment, insisting that “There is no funding shortfall. The work is progressing, and the quality of construction is second to none,” he added..
The senator also endorsed Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri’s commendation of the road, describing Diri’s remarks as those of a statesman recognising infrastructure built to international standards.
While acknowledging Duke’s right to make his case to Nigerians as a presidential aspirant, Murray-Bruce urged caution against criticising a project of national importance for political advantage.
"When Governor Douye Diri commended the road, he was not speaking as a local champion; he was speaking as a statesman who recognises infrastructure of international standard when he sees it. I agree with him completely.
"Donald, I understand that you are running for president, and that your statement is political. That is the nature of the season, and I respect your right to make your case to Nigerians. But we must be careful never to undermine a project of national importance, or the President delivering it, simply for political advantage."
He compared the highway project to the United States’ moon mission, saying that although it was costly, it was necessary.
