YANGA EMPIRE: The Face, Motivation Behind the Cleaning Services Brand [Series 2]

updated 03 Apr, 2024

The birth of Yanga Empire Cleaning Services is one that could be attributed to a bold determination and the power "to do" rather than to just dream. Indeed, as American author and a former dotcom business executive, Seth Godin, puts it: “There’s no shortage of remarkable ideas; what’s missing is the will to execute them.”

With the above quote, PENGlobal Business welcomes you to the second series of Yanga Empire Cleaning Services as it unveils more facts about the face and the motivation behind the innovative cleaning services brand that is inspiring young entrepreneurs to undertake more challenging tasks. In this personal chat with the brand's founder and chief executive, we also delved into one of the misdemeanors attached to the profession of being a cleaner.

◼️ Yanga Empire's Boss Lady
Mrs. Elizabeth Peremoboere Tonghan-Ekpemupolo, a former beauty queen who previously held the titles of the Queen of Izon-Ibe and then Queen Africa, is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Yanga Empire, whose subsidiary, Yanga Empire Cleaning Services has been dominating both the social media online and public space since her bold move "to execute" the "remarkable idea" of venturing into the cleaning services. Mrs. Tonghan-Ekpemupolo is also currently the special assistant on Research and Speech Writing to the Speaker of the eight Delta State House of Assembly.

◼️ Yanga Empire: From Fashion to Cleaning Services
Interestingly, one of the startup ideas of Yanga Empire was far from the cleaning services. As a beauty queen, what came close was fashion, as she revealed: "Yanga Empire Cleaning Services is a subsidiary of Yanga Empire Nigeria Limited of which I registered the company because I really wanted to go into fashion. Five years ago I could see myself as a fashion guru, someone that is into fashion, maybe tailoring—making clothes for people, or mixing colours, trying to combine colours for people and all that. That was what I intended to do with Yanga Empire. I didn't really think that cleaning services was what I really intended to do."

◼️ The Motivation for Cleaning
On how Mrs. Tonghan-Ekpemupolo switched from the fashion idea to the cleaning services idea, she admitted: "The motivation for Yanga Empire Cleaning Services is my husband. For my husband, the word 'cleanliness' or 'neatness' should be part of my husband's love language. There's this quote that has been going around for ages that 'A clean home is a happy home.' There's no way my husband will walk into the home and when he smells something nice, he would like 'This is how I want my house to be.' That is part of his love language if you ask me, and I think that was really a huge motivation for me."

◼️ Doing Something Different
"That apart, another motivation for me was the fact that I really wanted to do something really different. You know, a lot of people are into fashion and design. A lot of people are into sales of fabrics, which I was doing years ago. But I really wanted to do something different. How this cleaning services works is like magic and is still much of a surprise to me because through it I have been able to empower people by creating employment. I ensure that I pay their wages as at when due. You know, this is what I really wanted to do. And I am glad that I was able to figure it out. That cleaning service is something that I am doing now and it has come to stay."

◼️ I'm Proud I Clean for a Living
"Some of the challenges that I have faced here in Warri is that, because cleaning service is not really that announced, a lot of people tend to look down on you the moment you say you're a cleaner. You know I'm very proud when I say I'm a cleaner. In one of the shirts I branded, I said 'I clean for a living'. And then a lot of people started sharing and were like, 'Ah! you're a cleaner, this is the first cleaner that I've seen and she's proud of what she does.' Yes I'm proud of what I do because it puts food on the table and the table of many others. So it's something I should be proud of."

◼️ Being a Cleaner is like any other profession
"The challenge that I face is that people tend to look down on cleaners here in the city of Warri. I mean it's a general thing, but I think here in the city of Warri it's really very very common. At the moment you say that you're a cleaner, they look down on you and they see you as a nobody. But I'm here to change the narrative. And then again, you should not see cleaners as people that are low-life people. Cleaners are humans too. I mean, cleaners do a lot. There are a lot of people that are working class men and women out there. You may not have the time to clean. This is where cleaners come in. So, why look down on someone that is trying to ensure that your home is clean, taking the responsibility of cleaning your home seriously while you are busy doing other things with your life?" she asked rhetorically. And then added: "So, just as you are a banker, you are a medical doctor, whatever, cleaning also is a career, and it's a career that is meant to be respected."

◼️ I Still Depend On My Husband
As a working class woman and entrepreneur, one would think Mrs. Tonghan-Ekpemupolo is contented financially. But here what she has to say: "Let me first of all correct something you just said, not depending on your husband. I still depend on my husband (laughs). But then, I know what you are trying to say, like not depending on him totally. A woman should be a support system to her husband. That is why it's encouraging. I would encourage that women should look for something to do with their lives. Try to look for something, no matter how little, to do, to ensure that they bring something to the table to support their husbands. Considering the way the economy is going, it is obvious that even the struggle and hustling of a man may not be able to fend for the family entirely. So it is important that as a woman, you should do something. No matter how little, just do something."

◼️ Yanga Empire's Message
"The message I have for readers out there concerning Yanga Empire Cleaning Services is that Yanga Empire Cleaning Services is a company, a cleaning company that is here to ensure that your homes are clean, to ensure that we give you a befitting service, satisfactory service. So, we are pleading that you patronize us, which is very important for us as a company and as a business because this will keep our business going."
