WINGATE MODEL SCHOOLS: Elder Okoro advocates for grassroots sports, receives medal at 7th interhouse competition
Elder Amos Okoro of the Happy Men's Club, a nongovernmental organisation in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria, has called for the encouragement of sports activities in the grassroots as a way of discovering talents, catching them young and grooming them for national and global accomplishments.
The President of the Happy Men's Club made the call at the concluded 7th Inter-House Sports competition organised by the Wingate Model Schools in Ogunu near Warri, Delta State, on February 14, 2025.
Elder Okoro who was a guest patron of Yellow House, one of the houses among the four participating houses of Blue, Green and Red in the competition, was presented with a medal by the Principal of the school, Pastor Chuks Valentine, for his show of sportsmanship in support of the activities.
The game activities that featured in the inter-house sports are track events, sack race, lime race, rupturing of balloons, filling in the basket and bottles, sorting colours, tug of war, table tennis, parade, among others.
The activities were fun-filled as parents in their large numbers joined the principal, teachers, pupils and students of the school to witness the day's outdoor sporting activities that earmarked the 2025 edition.
"The ceremony was a great one, a great success in terms of performance," said Elder Okoro, in a brief chat with PENGlobal Entertainment. "Like you said, sport is also part of education and grassroot sport is very, very important because from grassroot sport, young talents have been discovered and those are the ones that will come to represent the country and sometimes the world. So, it's a good thing."
The medalist called for more attention by schools to be given to sports as well as for collaboration among schools in organising and participating in sports activities.
"Sport is one thing that schools should continue to put in the forefront of education. And of course, Wingate has actually been one of such school that does not play with sports, bringing people together, competing among themselves, even external with other schools.
"Like today, other schools came and were competing among themselves. And that is collaboration and oneness. So, it's great and it's something that actually needs to be encouraged in all schools," he added.
The Wingate Model Schools, as stated in its website, is a Cambridge International Certified School, which "was conceived and born out of a vision to establish unique schools... towards restoring standard and morality in pupils and students across the globe" and "to contribute meaningfully, to global development through training individual capable of contributing their quotas to the development of their respective societies and nations."
