TRADE UNION CONGRESS: Asekutu emerges Delta State Council Chairman

Comrade Wilson Asekutu, a seasoned labour leader from Polobubou community in Egbema Kingdom, Warri North Local Government Area of Delta State, has emerged as Chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Delta State Council, after a smooth and peaceful election that held at the 1st Quadrennial Delegates’ Conference in Asaba, the state capital.

The Conference, which took place at the Samuel Dietake Multipurpose Event Hall, saw Comrade Asekutu elected unopposed, a development widely applauded by delegates as a demonstration of unity, maturity and strong democratic values within the Congress.

The TUC, established in its current form in 2005, is a national trade union federation in Nigeria that unites and represents senior staff associations.

Comrade Festus Osifo, the TUC President General, who was represented by Comrade Oluchi-Favour Ubani, commended the Delta State Council for a seamless transition, describing the peaceful process as a reflection of the Congress’s collective resolve to build a stronger and more resilient labour movement at all levels.

The President General congratulated the newly elected Executive Committee and prayed for a tenure marked by progress, stability and impactful service to workers across the state.

In his acceptance speech, Comrade Asekutu expressed gratitude to the delegates for their confidence in his leadership and pledged to build on the achievements of the outgoing administration, strengthen solidarity among affiliate unions, and champion the rights and welfare of workers in both the public and private sectors.

He further stated that his leadership will focus on addressing critical issues affecting Delta workers, including rising cost of living, casualisation, job insecurity, fair wages, and the need for improved workplace safety and conditions.

Comrade Asekutu who currently serves as the PENGASSAN Warri Zonal Secretary, is also a member of both the PENGASSAN Central Working Committee and the National Executive Council. He brings years of experience, including senior-level engagement in the oil and gas industry.

Delta workers and labour affiliates across the state have expressed optimism that the new leadership will consolidate on existing gains and deliver a more robust and responsive labour front.

The TUC's objectives include promoting the welfare of its members, securing equitable agreements with employers, and supporting legislation that benefits senior staff. As an active body, it is frequently engaged in negotiations with the government and employers on issues like the cost of living and minimum wage implementation.
