TOMPOLO: An Embodiment of Humility, Justice-Minded Character of Ijaw People — Elder Orubu
Elder statesman, Chief James Orubu, has commended High Chief Government Oweizide Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, for what he described as his embodiment of humility and justice-minded character of the Ijaw people, as demonstrated in his recent contributions toward the successful correction of longstanding political and electoral ward delineation abnormalities in the Warri Federal Constituency of Delta State.
Orubu, in a statement titled "The Ijaw Man," also applauded the Federal and Delta State governments for their roles in addressing the ward delineation issues in the Warri area.
The elder statesman portrayed Tompolo as a symbol of the humble and justice-minded character of the Ijaw people, stressing that despite having the capacity and influence to assert themselves, the Ijaws do not seek to dominate others but remain committed to fairness, peaceful coexistence and the defence of their legitimate rights.
According to him, the different expressions "Ijaw", "Ezon", "Izon" and "Ijo" refer to the same people whose fundamental disposition, he said, is anchored on truth and doing what is right.
"The word or name 'Ijaw', 'Ezon', 'Izon' or 'Ijo', so on and so forth means the same thing—that is the truth. Truth in this context is doing the right thing at all times. He does not aspire to dominate others even if he has the capacity to do so," Orubu stated.
He further maintained that while the Ijaw man believes strongly in the principle of treating others fairly, he would equally resist attempts to deny him justice or subject him to unfair treatment.
Orubu singled out Tompolo as embodying these qualities, describing the prominent Niger Delta leader as a humble Ijaw man whose disposition and contributions have helped advance the struggle for fairness and equity in the political representation of the people of Warri Federal Constituency.
"That humble Ijaw man is symbolized by High Chief Government Oweizide Ekpemupolo, AKA Tompolo," he stated.
The elder statesman expressed appreciation to Tompolo for his contributions towards the processes that culminated in addressing what he described as longstanding political and electoral ward delineation abnormalities in Warri.
He also commended the relevant authorities for taking steps towards correcting the situation, describing the development as a triumph for fairness and justice.
"Kudos to the government, federal and state, for correcting these political electoral ward delineation abnormalities in Warri Division," Orubu added, urging that the principles of truth, fairness and mutual respect should continue to guide relationships among the various ethnic groups in the area, with no group seeking to dominate another but all working towards peaceful coexistence and sustainable development.
The ward delineation issue in Warri Federal Constituency has for years generated political and communal concerns among stakeholders seeking equitable representation across the area's constituent communities.
