SCIENCE EDUCATION: EMT, Tompolo Foundation donate Lab Equipment to Icon School as Proprietor, students express gratitude
In a bid to enhance scientific studies and boost the quality of learning, the Esther Matthew Tonlagha (EMT) Foundation and the Tompolo Foundation (TF) have donated laboratory equipment worth millions of naira to the Icon United Millennium School (IUMS) at Orhuwhorun Road in the Udu local government area of Delta State.
The laboratory equipment were received by the Proprietor, Chief Timothy Intelligence Ojuyaina, penultimate Monday, in the school, which is located at No. 10 Mission Street, Potter's House, Behind Kepas Filling Station, Orhuwhorun Road.
Some of the laboratory equipment received are burrete, beaker, pipette, conical flask, test tubes, volumetric flask, crucible, weighing machines, bunsen burner, thermometer, tongs, microscope, specimen, anatomic diagrams and specimen, among others.
Briefing the students during the equipment presentation in the school laboratory, Mr. Paul Akpovhoghene Erhirhi, a retired senior academic teacher, noted that the equipment will further enhance students' understanding of science in practical terms.
He said, "I am glad to see the Esther Matthew Tonlagha and the Tompolo Foundation now filling the school with science materials and equipment that are going to be used to train you.
"You say you are a science student but you don't know what is called beaker, burrete... It is now your turn to start using these equipment very well. The teachers will stand with you to teach you the practicals of Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Agric. using these equipment.
"By the time your teacher will teach you Volumetric Analysis when you will titrate, you will have two of this (beaker) per student. One will go for acid, the other one will go for base," Mr. Erhirhi explained to the students as he introduced them to the equipment.
"It is kudos to the Esther Matthew Tonlagha Foundation, the Tompolo Foundation, and this school that today is a great day for you to have these millions of naira equipment," he added.
The retired teacher however cautioned the students to not tamper with the equipment that cost more and that they should follow laboratory instructions and rules in order to protect the equipment from being damaged as well as themselves from harm while in the laboratory.
A senior prefect, Silas Priscilla, on behalf of the students of IUMS, thanked the EMT and TF for their benevolence in transforming the school's laboratory through their supplies of the equipment which will help enhance their learning in science subjects.
Showing his appreciation, the Proprietor, Chief Ojuyaina expressed his gratitude to the EMT and the TF for coming to the rescue of IUMS to set up the school's laboratory which is a requirement by the educational governing body in Nigeria as the school pushes for recognition as a WAEC Center.
"Honestly, God in Heaven knows I appreciate Tompolo, Esther Matthew Tonlagha Foundation for the assistance they rendered to Icon School, for their providing complete science equipment for physics, chemistry, biology and agric learning. I am very happy; even the teachers and students are happy as it will make their teaching and learning easier.
"This lab is very important to us as it is one of the requirements as stated by the authorities, that will qualify the school as a WAEC Center, a process we are still on with, especially as there are still other areas to be met."
Chief Ojuyaina therefore appealed to other institutions and individuals to borrow leaf from the EMT and TF by reaching out to the school which offers day care, creche, nursery, primary, secondary and adult education, in support to help ameliorate its numerous challenges of boarding, library, environmental among others, while noting that an investment in education is the best investment humanity can make.
