RESTORED CONSTITUENCIES: INEC gives green light for conduct of primaries in Warri Federal Constituency, others

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the conduct of political parties' primaries in restored State Constituencies, including the Warri Federal Constituency, across the federation, from Tuesday, June 16 to Thursday, June 25, 2026.

The Commission made the announcement through its National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, in a press statement it released on its official X (formerly Twitter) page on Wednesday, June 10, 2026.

The statement, titled, "Conduct Of Party Primaries In The Restored Constituencies In Benue, Delta, Jigawa And Kogi States For The 2027 General Election", listed the restored constituencies in Benue, Delta, Jigawa, and Kogi states.

According to the INEC, the development is in "Pursuant to the Judgment of the Courts directing the restoration of some suppressed Constituencies in Benue, Delta, Jigawa and Kogi States, and in line with the powers conferred on the Commission by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) and the Electoral Act, 2026," it stated.

The Commission then went on to list the restored Constituencies in the states. For Benue state, the Constituencies are Nyamatsor, Ukum Afia, Konshisha III (Shangev-Tiev), Makurdi III (South East), and Gboko III.

For Delta State, the Constituencies are Aniocha North II, Ika North East II, Sapele II, Ethiope West II, Warri South West II, and Warri North II.

While for Jigawa state, the Constituency is Aujara, and for Kogi state, the Constituencies are Adavi East, Eika, Ajaokuta North, Bassa-Komu, Dekina To wn & District, ljumu II, Kabba-Bunu II, Koton Karfe II, Igalao gwa, and Ogugu.

The INEC fixed June 16 to 25, 2026, as dates for the party primary and requested political parties to act by making submission to the Commission of their Notices of Political Party Primaries.

"To facilitate the participation of the restored Constituencies in the 2027 General Election, particularly with respect to the nomination of candidates by Political Parties, the Commission has fixed the 16th-25th June, 2026 for the conduct of Political Party Primaries in the restored Constituencies.

"For the avoidance of doubt, all other timelines and activities contained in the already published revised Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2027 General Election shall apply to the restored Constituencies.

"In light of the peculiar nature of this arrangement, Political Parties are requested to submit Notices of Political Party Primaries to the Commission prior to the scheduled date for the Primaries.

"The Commission remains committed to ensuring credible, inclusive and transparent electoral processes," the statement concludes.
