updated 16 Oct, 2024

A National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Miss Ejiofor Felicia Chinelo, has said that the riverine area is the best place for her, citing the attention of care given to corp members (popularly referred to as corpers) by members of the riverine communities as one of the reasons for her decision to stay if engaged to continue in the teaching profession.

Miss Ejiofor, who is currently serving in Oporoza community, headquarters of Gbaramatu Kingdom in Warri South-West local government area and is due to complete her service in November 2024, made the revelation during the screening exercise to recruit community-based teachers organised by the Gbaramatu Youth Council in collaboration with the Tompolo Foundation, a nongovernmental organisation founded by High Chief Dr. Government Ekpemupolo alias Tompolo.

It would be recalled that over 200 applicants were successfully screened in Warri from Friday, October 11, to Saturday, October 12, 2024, as part of the moves by the Tompolo Foundation to mobilise teachers for primary and secondary schools in Gbaramatu Kingdom.

"It's the best place for me to stay. It's the best PPA in the whole Delta state. I even tell some of my friends they should come and apply for it even when they post them in another state, they should deploy," said the graduate of Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic Unwana, Ebonyi State that teaches Basic Science.

"They did not post me to Delta state. I did my camping in Jigawa. So when I relocated, they posted me to Gbaramatu. When I found out it was a riverine area, I said let me try my best.

"But then I discovered that it's the best place for every corper to stay. I do tell those people they post to Gbaramatu that they should try and come because it's the best place," she confessed.

Speaking further she explained "They are taking care of the corpers, they are trying, even for the monthly stipend, they pay us; they are not owing any corper and they do give us food items," she added.

Speaking on her relationship with her students she said, "When I was about to leave, I was telling my students that I'm going, but that I will still come back. All of them were like, 'No,! You should not leave us and go out of the community.' They like me because I do advise them they take their learning serious and they should try in attending school regularly."

When asked what her expectations are if successful engaged by the Tompolo Foundation, she said, "I don't know much, but anyhow. I will appreciate anything, because Gbaramatu and Mr. Kingsley are trying for corpers."
