PARENTING: Timiyan tasks parents on proper child upbringing, commends IIW

A recipient of the International Inner Wheel (IIW) District 916 Award of Excellence, Chief George Timiyan (JP), has tasked parents to play their roles effectively as responsible guardians in the upbringing of their wards as part of their responsibilities toward contributing to an egalitarian society.

Chief Timiyan, who is the Chief Executive Officer/Managing Director of GEOTimitek Nigeria Limited, made the appeal in Warri when he played host to the chairman and other members of the IIW at his office on Thursday, January 15, 2026.

The Miyenkeremowei of the ancient Gbaramatu Kingdom in Warri South-West LGA and the Mein Ibe-Disemowei of Ogulagha Kingdom in Burutu LGA, both of Delta State, commended the IIW as the world's largest women's voluntary service organization for looking out for the less privilege in society through its humanitarian efforts via clubs in over 100 countries.

He lauded the various initiatives of the IIW which he described as "humane gestures" and promised to support their projects whenever the need arises for that.

He said, "I commend the IIW for what they are doing and I urge them to keep doing what they know how to do best, especially in focusing on the less privileged through educational scholarships, welfare, among other initiatives.

"The wealth God has blessed us with is not just for us and our immediate family alone, but it is also to give back to the society. Biblically, when we give in the right manner, we become more blessed."

However, Chief Timiyan cautioned parents to be up and doing in playing their parental roles that will help to curb challenges that are currently prevailing in society, cautioning that parents have a huge role to play in making society better, not worse.

"I also use the media to advise the IIW and parents to counsel the young people and that parents should bring up their children responsibly. The parents, especially the mother, the father, have 85 percent role to play.

"If parents don't control their child in the early age, it becomes a problem in the older age when that child grows up. But if you control your child and raise up the child properly at the tender age, in the end that child will be a responsible person.

"When such happens, we will not be having problems of drug abuse, crimes, prostitution, among other ills that can affect the larger society. But if parents play their roles very well, the population of the less privilege will be less and the burden on society will be light," he added.
