OPOROZA: Godwin Febaide-led Exco Declare War on Indecent Dressing, Criminality, Other Social Vices

updated 14 Feb, 2024

The executive council of Oporoza community, headquarters of Gbaramatu Kingdom in the Warri South-West Local Government Area of Delta State, as led by its chairman Mr. Godwin Febaide have kicked against indecent dressing, all forms of drug abuse, criminality, poor sanitation habit, among other indecent acts in the community.

The executive council made its new postion known after arising from a crucial stakeholders meeting that held in the community town hall on Tuesday, February 13, 2024.

Among the community men, women and youths that were in attendance include the Tonwei of Gbaramatu Kingdom, Chief Nelson Ogelegbanwei; a community leader, Chief Miebi Aske; a former chairman of Oporoza, Chief Johnbull Demebi; the immediate-past chairman, Apst. Labort Tonfawei; a youth leader, Hon. Clems Tonfawei; alongside several others.

"This just concluded meeting, which is the first since I assumed office, is about how to build the Oporoza community by introducing some high standards," said Mr. Febaide, in a chat with PENGlobal Community.

"By introducing certain positive standards we are hopeful of attracting more developments to the community as well as tackle and arrest certain negative vices that pose danger to the intended development in the community," he added.

Speaking further on the negative vices he said, "The Gbaramatu people are well respected because they are responsible and decent. That is why we are campaigning against drug abuse, taking of illicit substance, indecent dressing, will be totally eradicated in our community.

"Oporoza community is a place where people visit frequently. And so our advice to parents is that they should discipline and ensure to raise up their children in a responsible manner to prevent peer influence. As the saying goes, 'Charity begins at home'.

"To the youths, you're doing something that is not right or is abnormal and your parents fail to call you to order, or you refuse to listen to rebuke from the elders. That wrong act will become a part of you and destroy your future.

"Therefore dress properly and be obedient. It doesn't mean you're not civilised, educated, or not exposed. Indecent dressing and hard drugs is not part of civilisation. This government will not tolerate such acts or behaviours," he warned.

On committees that will implement the decisions of the exco, Mr. Febaide revealed that no new committee has been set up because proper consultations are yet to be carried out, but noted that the present exco is in charge of existing committees in place.

"For now, no new committee has been set up but this present exco is in charge of overseeing the already existing committees that have been in place pending when wide consultations would have been done. Moreover, as the traditional headquarters, a lot of activities are ongoing in Oporoza community. For instance, preparations are already ongoing to host this year's Ameseikumor Festival and other daily activities too.

"The existing committees include sanitation, disciplinary, education, and revenue. We are going to ensure these committees swing into action pending when new ones will be set up," he revealed.
