NIGER DELTA: 'Arogbo-Ibe will not stand for the spread of falsehoods' – Kegbe

07 Mar, 2025

Online writers and publishers have been urged to desist from giving false narrative in the social media space especially concerning the history of a people in order not to harm their "cultural integrity" as well as to avoid "misleading" the general populace with unverifiable facts.

The appeal was made by the Chief Executive Officer and Publisher of Arogbo-Ibe Voice, Doctor Kegbe, in a post published on his Facebook wall on Friday, March 7, 2025.

The Arogbo-born publisher from Ondo State, who describes himself "As someone committed to preserving and upholding the true history and heritage of our people" vented his displeasure in the reckless manner some persons make use of the social media space to circulate false information to unsuspecting readers.

Kegbe, who was reacting to an unnamed publisher's post, cautioned that such publishers should base their publications on existing facts than on their ignorance or else they will face the consequences of their actions.

He wrote, "I have come across countless misleading and historically inaccurate post about Arogbo-Ibe circulating on the social media space. As someone committed to preserving and upholding the true history and heritage of our people, I find it necessary to set the record straight.

"First and foremost, history should be based on verifiable facts, not assumptions or distortions. The origins, migrations, and historical contributions of the Arogbo Ijaw people are well-documented and should not be misrepresented for any reason. The dissemination of false narratives, whether intentional or due to ignorance, is harmful to our cultural integrity.

"I urge a publisher of this misleading information to retract it immediately. Misinformation about Arogbo-Ibe is unacceptable, and those who engage in such acts must be held accountable for the consequences. The sanctity of our history should never be compromised by hearsay or personal interpretations that lack credible sources," he stated.

The Arogbo-Ibe Voice publisher further appealed to all "well-meaning Arogbo sons and daughters" to be cautious of the kind of information they put out on the social media space as it is their duty to safeguard their heritage from being corrupted.

He said, "Furthermore, I call on all well-meaning Arogbo sons and daughters to be mindful of the information they share, especially regarding our rich heritage. We must be vigilant in protecting our legacy and ensuring that only factual and well-researched historical accounts are promoted.

"Lastly, I want to caution against the reckless publication of distorted history. Anyone who seeks to rewrite the past for personal or mischievous reasons should be ready to face the consequences. Arogbo-Ibe will not stand for the spread of falsehoods.

"Let us continue to uphold truth, honour, and respect for our forebears," he further charged.
