The Chairman of Kokodiagbene Community in the ancient Gbaramatu Kingdom, Warri South-West Local Government Area of Delta State, Comrade Ark Selegha, has called on Gbaramatu students to remain committed to preserving the cultural heritage, values and identity of their people while embracing education, innovation and responsible leadership.

Selegha made the call on Saturday during his welcome address at the 7th Mega Elective Convention of the National Association of Gbaramatu Students (NAGS) in Kokodiagbene Community, on Saturday, July 25, 2026.

Among personalities in attendance are HRM Oboro Gbaraun II (JP), Pere of the ancient Gbaramatu Kingdom represented by the Miyenkeremowei of Gbaramatu Kingdom, Chief George Timiyan (JP); renowned academician Professor from Niger Delta University, Benedict Binebai; the President of the Ijaw National Congress (INC) and Prime Minister of Gbaraun Kingdom, High Chief (Hon.) MacDonald Igbadiwei, represented by the Leader in Warri South-West Legislative Chambers, Rt. Hon. Ekpemupolo Idukedoumene Samuel, among others.

He described the hosting of the convention by Kokodiagbene as a privilege and an indication of the confidence reposed in the community by the leadership of NAGS.

Speaking on the convention's theme, "Culture and Identity: Preserving the Heritage, Values and Legacy of Our People," Selegha described it as timely and relevant, noting that it highlights the responsibility of young people to safeguard the traditions, customs, language and moral values of the Gbaramatu people.

According to him, students and future leaders must preserve their cultural identity while taking advantage of educational opportunities and global innovations, stressing that "A people who neglect their culture and history risk losing their identity, but a people who preserve their heritage remain united, respected and firmly rooted in their ancestry."

Selegha also highlighted Kokodiagbene Community's contributions to educational development and student leadership in Gbaramatu Kingdom, noting that the community has produced three former Presidents of the NAGS in the personalities of Comrade Jackson Timiyan, Barr. Donatus Akpo Ukuli, and Comrade Doubra Timiyan, noting that the trio's exemplary leadership and dedication to the Association had left enduring legacies that continue to inspire younger generations across the kingdom.

As delegates prepared to elect a new executive, the community chairman urged contestants and delegates to uphold democratic principles by conducting themselves peacefully before, during and after the election.

He stressed that leadership should be viewed as an opportunity for selfless service rather than personal gain, urging whoever emerges victorious to work for the collective progress of Gbaramatu students.

Selegha further encouraged students to pursue academic excellence, discipline, integrity and good character while serving as worthy ambassadors of the kingdom.

He said the convention should strengthen unity among Gbaramatu communities and rekindle a renewed commitment to preserving the heritage and legacy of the Ijaw people for future generations.

The Kokodiagbene chairman also commended the organisers, Electoral Committee, patrons, advisers and other stakeholders for successfully organising the convention and wished participants a peaceful, successful and memorable event.
