IYC: Ijaw Youths in Western Zone Pledge to Advocate For, Defend Ijaw Cause

The ninth Zonal Executive Council of the Ijaw Youth Council, IYC, Western Zone, comprising Delta, Edo and Ondo states, as led by its chairman, Comrade Nicholas Igarama, has pledged to recommit itself to advocate for and defend the cause of the Ijaw people.

The zonal executive of the IYC, Western Zone's pledge was contained in a communique issued at the end of its maiden meeting on Thursday, June 6, 2024.

According to the communique, the Western Zone of the IYC which pledged unity of council members, among other conclusions reached, also called for unity among Ijaws in the zone, and that all Ijaws of eligible age, particularly in Edo and Ondo states, should register for the forthcoming gubernatorial elections; as well as for the respective state government in the zone to prioritize the development of Ijaw areas.

Below is the full statement titled: 'Communique Issued at the End of the Maiden Meeting of the 9th Zonal Executive Council of the Ijaw Youth Council, Western Zone, on Thursday 6, June 2024.'

1. The 9th Zonal Executive Council of the Ijaw Youth Council, Western Zone expresses gratitude to the national officers of council, stakeholders and members of council for the massive turn out at the elective convention at Odimodi Community, Iduwini Clan, Delta State.

2. The Zonal Executive Council commends the Emmanuel Akpule-led Zonal Electoral Council (ZECO) for the conduction of a peaceful, free, and credible election.

3. Western Zone remains a united and formidable zone, and the 9th Zonal Executive Council led by Nicholas Igarama will consolidate and strengthen the existing peace in the zone by way of appropriate stakeholder / members engagement.

4. We reiterate that Western Zone is an indivisible entity, and as such, the leadership of the zone will not condole any attempts by unscrupulous elements to cause division among members of council.

5. Ijaws of eligible age should turn out in their numbers and be registered at the ongoing voters registration exercise in Edo and Ondo States ahead of the forthcoming governorship elections in both states.

6. The Executive Council also use this medium to call on the Delta, Edo and Ondo State government and all relevant agencies to prioritize development in the Ijaw areas of their respective states.

7. Call on all contractors with abandoned projects around the zone to do well by returning to site as Council will embark on fact-finding mission in no distant time.

8. The 9th Zonal Executive Council reiterates her commitment to further unify members of Council in the zone and peace among national officers from the zone and the entire 9th NEC & Parliament. We recommit ourselves to being advocates and defenders of the Ijaw cause.
