BIOGRAPHY: Late Madam Power Sukunu, Among the First Women to Build Aluminum House in Her Hometown — Hon. Oturubo
A former Senior Special Assistant to the Delta State Government, Hon. Akpodikumor Oturubo, has stated that the late Madam Power Idibi Sukunu nee Ukuli, among other records, "was among the first female to build aluminum zinc house in Kokodiagbene town" in Gbaramatu Kingdom, a worthy achievement during her days.
The former SSA, who was also a one-time chairman of Okerenkoko community in Gbaramatu Kingdom, made the revelation during a church service held by the Ogono-Ebizor Zion C&S Church in Benikrukru town on Friday, August 11, 2023, as part of the funeral rites held in honour of the late Madam Sukunu.
Hon. Oturubo, who read the biography of his grandmother, said the deceased was a hardworking woman who joined her husband in their fishing business as entrepreneurs, an occupation that led to her becoming successful, even going as far as founding her own fishing camp.
"Mama Power Tamarakuro Sukunu was the first female child of her father. She was not privilege to have a formal education. She grew up to join her parents in their fishing occupation which was a major means of livelihood as of then. She was a hardworking person and loved by many," reads Hon. Oturubo.
"Mama met her heartthrob, Late Pa. Capt. Idibi Sukunu in Ogidadunor fishing camp which is few kilometers away from Kokodiagbene town and they both got married. After their union they left for Kunukunuma town. After a while they returned back to Ogidadunor to commence their fishing occupation.
"Late Mama Power Tamarakuro Sukunu began to wax stronger in her fishing occupation. She developed herself in several fishing skills. She made a lot of money then. She was the first female to build aluminum zinc house in Kokodiagbene town. In her days she was the talk of the town among her equals.
“Mama proceeded further to found her own fishing camp which lasted several years. She raised many with her money. Today most of them are doing well in various areas; she was a very generous and kindhearted woman.”
On his grandmother spiritual life, Hon. Oturubo, who read from the biography said: “In the early 80's Mama received Christ and moved to Tamarabode Zion, Kokodiagbene town and worshipped there. She built a house and reside there. She went to School of Theology, Ugbonla in Ondo State, and was ordained as Ayaba Esther in 1986. She began to wax strong in the things of God. Mama later moved to join her biological mother, late Mama Desimene Ukuli at Benikrukru town. There she spent the rest of her life.”
Others who paid tributes to the late Madam Sukunu include Elder Israel Ukuli and Madam Beauty Warejouwei, both describing the deceased as a good mother and a woman of substance who used her resources to help many people that were in need.
The late Madam Sukunu, who was born on February 1926 into the family of Pa. Ukuli Bekenawei in Kokodiagbene town and Kunukunuma town, both in Gbaramatu Kingdom died on Wednesday, 26th July 2023. She was blessed with seven children, 27 grand children and 40 great grandchildren.
