BIOGRAPHY: Late Chief John Brawuru Diegbegha's Final Journey Home

Popularly known as "Yeye-Dey, Na God O!" the Late Chief John Brawuru Diegbegha, the Benikariwei of Ogulagha Kingdom, was finally laid to rest in his hometown Ogulagha, in Ogulagha Kingdom, Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State, on Saturday, March 2, 2024, after a social wake-keep ceremony that began on the evening of Friday, March 1.

According to the biography, the Late Chief John Brawuru Diegbegha was born on the 24th of April 1956, into the family of the Late HRH Diegbegha Sagha, a renowned clan head in Ogulagha Kingdom of Kpesigba Quarters, Ajibala family of Torububou Quarters, Obotobo 1 Town, and Agbeghabor, Keneka Quarters, Ogulagha Town, all in Ogulagha Kingdom, Burutu Local Government Area, Delta State.

The late Chief John Brawuru Diegbegha is described as a man that has the natural fear of God, hence he was known for his words "Na God O!" which he often say with a smiling face. Those words eventually became a slogan by which he was popularly known.

From his childhood to his demise, Chief John Brawuru Diegbegha was also known to have love for humanity, was fun-loving, and loves singing, dancing, and sharing jokes.

Particularly, he is further described as "an epitome of encouragement to anyone that comes around him" and that until his death, he was a peace advocate and diligent to all his service to humanity, while being a committed father to his family, to his business, and to the king and the kingdom in general.

Born at a time when formal education was rare in the riverine area, Chief John Brawuru Diegbegha was among the few in his days to have the opportunity of a primary education.

Academically, he attended Saghan Primary School, Saghabene, which was a local authority school (LA Primary School) between 1962 to 1968 and successfully obtained his first school leaving certificate.

As was the norm during that time, he humbly joined his parents in trading local gin popularly known as 'Ogogoro' as well as engaging in fishing occupation. However, he knew there was more opportunities in life and was determined to exploit the possibilities of success.

And so, in his quest for self development and success, he moved from the riverine area to the city of Warri where he studied and obtained a Quarter Master certificate as a Marine Captain after rigorous study in a Marine School.

The Late Chief John Brawuru Diegbegha worked in several companies, both foreign and local, until he retired and started his own company as a contractor to Shell and many other companies.

In the late 90's Chief John Brawuru Diegbegha became a community leader when he was conferred with a chieftaincy title—the Benikarewei of Ogulagha Kingdom. He was also a senior chief and well known within and outside the kingdom before his death.

Late Chief John Brawuru Diegbegha John got married to his lovely wife, Mrs. Tare John Diegbegha who hails from Obotebe Kingdom in the Burutu LGA. He was blessed with nine (9) children and eight (8) grand children.

The Late Chief John Brawuru Diegbegha is greatly appreciated and will be missed as a leader in Ogulagha, a tribute penned down in the closing of the biography section reads, and it continued, "Indeed, you said, Yeye-Dey too much in this sinful world. This word and truth it reflects became a popular name associated with you and as a credit to your generous and loving personality. May your gentle soul rest in peace."
