2027: Students of Oil Producing Ethnic Nationalities endorse Oborevwori, commend DESOPADEC

The President of the National Association of Delta State Ijaw Students (NADIS) Worldwide, Comrade Aweh Nanasintei Johnson, along with the Chairman of the Confederation of Delta State Oil Producing Ethnic Nationality Student Union (CODSOPENSU), Mr. Freedom Onajite Onagba, have endorsed His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for a second term in office with the assurance that students from the oil-producing ethnic nationalities stand firmly with the governor till 2031 in recognition of his endless commitment to the welfare and future of students.

The endorsement was made by the student bodies from Ijaw, Isoko, Ika, Itsekiri, Ndokwa, and Urhobo ethnic nationalities under the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC) mandate areas during their visit to the Commission's office in Warri on Thursday, March 5, 2026.

Among the management of DESOPADEC that received the student bodies are the Managing Director, Chief Festus Ochonogor, represented by the Executive Director of Social Services, Chief Favour Izoukumor; the Executive Director, Finance and Administration, Chief Oghenekome Okpobor, and the Executive Director of Projects, Dr. Ebenezer Okorodudu.

The student body, giving their reasons for the total support to Governor Oborevwori to continue in office for a second tenure, listed the educational achievements of the governor and his commitment to improving infrastructures in the state.

According to the student bodies, "Under Governor Oborevwori's visionary leadership, Delta State has achieved remarkable credit in education and infrastructural development, as the state has made significant investments to expand and modernize key faculties and supporting facilities for medical and health sciences at the main campus in Ozoro," adding that "Major institutional infrastructure has been delivered, such as the central administrative block (White House), modern lecture halls, well equipped auditoriums, and practical training facilities at the Delta State Polytechnic, Otefe-Oghara.

"In addition, the construction of the Southern Delta University campus in Oreorokpe is progressing with the speed of light, while over 100 primary and secondary schools across the state have been rehabilitated to provide conducive learning environments for students, not withstanding employing over 1,300 fresh graduates to strengthen academic and administrative excellence.

"The commitment of His Excellency for youth empowerment through the consistent disbursement of the state bursary has benefited over 96,000 students. He also approved increments of the DESOPADEC bursary from ₦30,000 to ₦50,000, due to the plea of the six ethnic national student president to ease the financial burden of students through the help of the DESOPADEC Board's Executive Director of Social Services, Hon Chief Favour Izoukumor, and Hon. Festus M. Ochonogor, the Managing Director in the Board of Desopadec."

Speaking further they said, "The Governor also empowered 533 Nigerian Law School students who receive scholarships in their academic pursuit. The steadfast commitment of his excellency to enhancing the education sector within the state and investing in the future of students cannot be overstated.

"The Delta State governor has demonstrated visionary and purposeful leadership anchored on the M.O.R.E Agenda, giving access to meaningful development, opportunities for all, and enhanced peace and security within the state. His administration reflects inclusiveness, accessibility, and a genuine grassroots connection with the people. 

"As student union for the oil producing communities, we have witnessed a leadership that listens, consults, and acts without discrimination or marginalization. Our oil producing communities remain the economic backbone of State and the Nation at large. These efforts affirm a commitment to equitable development across the six ethnic nationalities in the DESOPADEC mandate areas, and we believe with utmost confidentiality that continuity in his leadership will ensure the completion and expansion of ongoing projects across the urban and rural-riverine communities.

"We acknowledge the strides made in creating opportunities for young people to grow academically and professionally. We know without a doubt that a second tenure will consolidate and expand these gains, align with the M.O.R.E Agenda," they added.

The student bodies said it appreciated the DESOPADEC Board led by the Chairman, Chief John Nani, and other executives for their audience when the need arises in reaching out to them, for the successful payment of the 2025 DESOPADEC bursary, just as they expressed optimism that the 2026 DESOPADEC bursary is sure for the students, praising the Commission's management that "Their dedication and efficiency have ensured that students from oil-producing areas continue to benefit from this laudable initiative."
