17TH AMASUO-UGEH FESTIVAL: Tompolo Peace and Unity Cup Flags off in Kokodiagbene as Organisers Call for Collaboration

The Tompolo Peace and Unity Cup competition organised by the Planning Committee of the Amasuo-Ugeh Festival 2024 has flagged-off in Kokodiagbene community, Gbaramatu Kingdom, Warri South-West Local Government Area of Delta State, on Sunday, December 15, 2024.

The football competition, which is aimed at fostering peace and unity between Kokodiagbene and other communities in the kingdom, is part of the series of activities lined up to commemorate the 17th annual edition of the year-end festival.

The grand opening of the competition was flagged-off with a football match between the host, Kokodiagbene FC, and Benikrukru FC, at the Ebiabu Primary School field in the community.

The second game between Oporoza FC and Kunukunuma FC is scheduled for Tuesday, December 17, while the third place match and the final match will be played on Thursday, December 19, and Saturday, December 21, respectively.

The football match between Kokodiagbene FC and Benikrukru FC, which had both opponents putting up an impressive performance, ended with two goals to one in favour of the latter.

With the results of the opening match, Benikrukru FC will take on the winner of the second game in the final encounter on Saturday, while Kokodiagbene FC will slug it out with the loser of the second match for the third place position on Thursday.

The Planning Committee Chairman, Chief George Timiyan (JP), who spoke on behalf of the Executive Chairman Comr. Pedro Tuwayerin Bekenawei, earlier declared the competition open, cautioned participants to abide by the rules of the game as well as the officials of the competition to be transparent in the discharge of their duties.

He charged all in attendance to embrace the spirit of unity and peace which the competition is organised to foster among communities and inhabitants of the coastal kingdom stressing that what they all needed is collaboration to attract more meaningful development to the various communities in the kingdom.

Chief Timiyan also revealed that the winner of the competition will go home with N200,000 cash; while the first, second and third runners-up will be awarded the cash prize of N150,000k, N100,000k and N50,000k respectively.

Other commentators such as the Youth President of Kokodiagbene, Comr. Laide Blessing; the Chairman of the Local Organising Committee (LOC), Mr. Solomon Akoto; and the Sports Chairman of Kokodiagbene, Mr. Victor Emotimide, thanked the organisers for organising the competition which is a demonstration of youths' participation in the affairs of the community.

The opening ceremony also witnessed dance entertainment from the Fire Dancers cultural troupe, whose dancers put up an impressive performance before spectators.
